Dorothy & Her Friends Already Had It & You Do Too!

The widely known and greatly respected 1939 film The Wizard of Oz has certainly gone down in the history books as one of the most best-loved films of all time.  In fact, it spawned my absolutely favorite Broadway musical: Wicked.  On the surface, both the film and the musical can be perceived as simply great entertainment (colors, characters, songs, choreography, etc.); yet, recently the learning points within the driving ideas themselves seemed to jump out at me.  We can all remember who needed what… Dorothy needed DIRECTION, the Scarecrow needed a BRAIN, the Tin Man needed A HEART, and the Cowardly Lion needed COURAGE.  These learning points relate to each of us so well:

DIRECTION — Dorothy had been thrown into a strange place and odd situation.  She spent her time searching for a way to get to a particular destination [Kansas].  Thankfully, along the way she was willing to help a few individuals in the process.  Many times in life we find that we desire to get somewhere and become frustrated that all roads seem to end at a roadblock.  But, we must continue trying other roads and continuing to build bridges to new places!

BRAIN — The Scarecrow thought all he was created to do was to ward off scarecrows and other silly varmints from getting into his field.  He had a greater calling than what he could see in front of him.  He just hadn’t realized his full potential yet.

HEART — As the saying goes, “Love makes the world go ’round”.  The Tin Man had to have thought others viewed him as a hard shelled individual; yet, that wasn’t the way he’d like others to see him.  He wanted a heart that beat like everyone else’s – a heart that said he was real and was willing to share it with everyone who cared.

COURAGE — How many of us wished we could head down a yellow-bricked road and ask a wizard for a little more strength and ability to face those things that we fear most?!  There’s no magic bullet that gives one strength.  The strength and courage we have comes from within, but it also comes from those we surround ourselves with.  The people that allow to speak into our lives (spouses, friends, relatives, co-workers, etc.) either discourage or encourage the courage that is within us.  The Cowardly Lion only needed the help of his new found friends to help him realize his potential.

In the end, Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion already had the means around them to get what they desired.  They didn’t need to make that long trek to the Emerald City to see the wizard after all.  It was within them already.  There are so many wonderful traits within every man, woman, boy and girl that are yet to be tapped into.

Now, don’t take this as a “positive thinking” type of idea, but factual.  I know several people who have wonderful giftings and potential, but seem to be content living life halfway.  If you want to experience life at it’s fullest you are going to find that you need some direction, some clarity in thinking, some heart toward a matter, and some courage to make the needed decisions.  Look to those around you for encouragement and help.  You can do IT!
